Abstract:
For the expansion of mariculture space and development of abalone aquaculture in offshore areas, study on economic benefits between novel and traditional aquaculture technologies for abalone was conducted in the developing open water of Xinghua bay. Moreover, the benefit between the developing open and traditional sheltered water was also analysed. The results showed that the highest benefit was obtained from the PVC pipe containers located in open sea water, followed by the plastic crates in the same area, and then those in the sheltered water. The input-output ratios were 1:2.78, 1:2.23, 1:1.07, respectively. To get similar sizes and weights of abalones, it would take 272 d and 136 d more, respectively, for the plastic crate cultivation in sheltered and open water than those cultivated in PVC pipe containers in open water. It was estimated that their input-output ratios were 1:1.82 and 1:2.73, respectively. The cost for abalone aquaculture was mainly composed of labor and feed. After using the PVC pipe container for abalone cultivation, 33.3% of labor cost could be cut. Moreover, the combination technique of abalone and algal cultivation could reduce feed cost by 28.1%~34.77%, and the input-output ratios was 1:3.61~3.71. The longline PVC pipe mariculture technique not only solves the problems of abalone cultivation in open water, but also produces considerable economic benefits. Therefore, it can be foreseen that this technology will have wide application prospects.
