Abstract: |
The citrus industry has being threatened by a devastating bacterial disease, citrus Huanglongbing(HLB). Use of HLB-bacterium free nursery trees, elimination of infected trees and implement of coordinated control of the vector insect, the Asian Citrus Psyllid( ACP),are effective but difficult to be efficiently applied in small newly planted orchards. This is because it usually takes at least three years for traditionally used small trees to grow to commercial productivity, forcing most of the small growers to take a second job to sustain their family during this period and leaving most of the orchards improperly attended for HLB. To alleviate the problem, the author proposed to use very large pathogen-free nursery trees grown in insect-proof screen houses in combination with growth promoting cultural practices to reduce the three-year long youth period to one year. It has been shown from our four-year trials that the strategy is very effective in reducing the HLB incidences and in increasing the returns of growing citrus in HLB-endemic areas. The principles, advantages and future perspective of the technique were briefly described and discussed. |
