Abstract:
The present study investigated the in vitro antiparasitical efficacy of 40 Chinese herbal medicines water extracts against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. The results showed that the water extracts of Prunella vulgaris, Agrimonia eupatoria,Panax notoginseng, etc,at the concentration of 50 g/L could kill all trophonts within 4 h, the water extracts of Sophora japonica,Gleditsia sinensis,Llex pubescens and so forth at the concentration of 10 g/L could kill all trophonts, the water extracts of Cercis chinensis and Herba hydrocotylis resulted in 100% mortality of trophonts at the concentration of 1 g/L,the water extract of Zingiber officinale at the concentration of 0.1 g/L resulted in 100% mortality of trophonts. The water extract of Z. officinal showed the highest antiprotozoal efficacy against trophonts and theronts, and the lethal concentrations to trophonts and theronts were 100 and 50 mg/L, respectively. The 4-h median effective concentration( EC50) values of water extract of Z. officinal to trophonts and theronts were 30.3 mg/L and 15.7 mg/L,respectively. The water extract of Z. officinal at a concentration of 100 mg/L eliminated the reproduction of all encysted tomonts. The results indicate that Z. officinal is a potential new drug for the control of ichthyophthiriasis.
