Abstract:
The growth rhythms of annual seedlings of 11 provenances of Phoebe bournei were studied. Results indicated that:the growth rhythm of height of all 11 provenances appeared as an“ S” trend of“ Slow-Fast-Slow”. The seedling height reached its growth peak in May and September, while several provenances’ second growth peak appeared in October. The growth of the ground diameter did not accord with the typical“ S” growth pattern;two growth peaks of the ground diameter emerged one month later than that of the seedling height;high fitting precisions were found in the Logistics equation for the growth of seedling height and ground diameter in all provenances. Through the application of sequential cluster analysis in combination with the seedlings’ growth characteristics, the growth of seedling height and ground diameter in 11 provenances could be divided into 4 stages,i.e.,emergence, early growth, rapid growth and later growth. The net growth of seedling height in the rapid growth stage accounted for more than 55% of the annual growth. The net growth of ground diameter in the rapid growth stage accounted for 34%-48% of the annual growth. The results from the analysis of variance suggested that the seedling height and the ground diameter differed significantly among the 11 provenances. The 11 provenances were analyzed by hierarchical clustering, then were divided into 3 groups. The first group was fast growth provenance, including those from Fuchuan and Ziyuan in Guangxi Province;the second group was moderate growth provenances, including those from Sinan and Congjiang in Guizhou Province,Laifeng in Hubei Province,Qiyang and Yongshun in Hunan Province, Chongyi and Jinggang in Jiangxi Province, and Nanping in Fujian Province;the third group was from Yuanling in Hunan Province, which was the provenance with slow growth.
