Abstract: |
The total phenolics were extracted from the peel and pulp of Garcinia mangostana fruit with 95%
ethanol, and were subjected to quantification using Folin phenol method. The antioxidant activities of the peel and
pulp extracts were evaluated by using Hydroxyl,DPPH and ABTS radical method,as well the acetylcholine esterase
and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity were assayed. The results suggested that the peel extract contained a very high
level of total phenolics( 21.36 mg/g DW) with the high capacity to scavenge DPPH,ABTS and hydroxyl radical
in a concentration-dependent manner. The IC50 were 37.39,41.34,41.37 μg/mL,respectively. It also exhibited the strong inhibitory activity against acetylcholine esterase and α-Glucosidase in a concentration-dependent
manner with IC50 of 29.46 and 7 μg/mL,respectively. Unlike those from peel, the extracts from pulp contained
much lower level of total phenolics( 0.388 mg/g DW). The antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity against
acetylcholine esterase were also found to be weaker in the extracts from the pulp when compared with those from
peel, which displayed modest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50 of 2.24 mg/mL. It was concluded that
the poly-phenols from the peel of Garcinia mangostana fruit had strong antioxidant potential and α-glucosidase
inhibitory activity as well as acetylcholine esterase inhibitory activity, whereas, those from the pulp indicated the
modest level of activities. |
