Abstract:
      The research and development of hybrid rice of Rice Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in the last 50 years is reviewed. After long-term practice and exploration, great breakthroughs have been made in breeding of weak-photosensitivity and late-maturing three-line hybrid rice, early and middle maturing threeline hybrid rice, Honglian-type hybrid rice, two-line hybrid rice, and high and super high yield breeding, quality breeding,molecular marker-assisted breeding as well as the research of important genetic basis of hybrid rice by Rice Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Strictly following the heterotic group and combination pattern of hybrid rice, a large number of two-line and three-line male sterile lines, with good combining ability, high outcrossing rate or good quality, such as Tianfeng A, Wufeng A, Rongfeng A, Taifeng A, Guang 8A, GD-1S and RGD-7S, etc. were developed. A number of excellent restorer lines with ideal dynamic plant type and disease-resistance such as Guanghui 3550, Guanghui 122, Guanghui 998, Guanghui 308, etc. were bred and applied for test cross, and a great number of new hybrid rice varieties with early-, middle- and late-maturity were developed and passed the provincial variety registration or above. Among them, seventeen hybrid rice varieties including Tianyou 998, Tianyou 122, Wuyou 308, Ganxin 203, Wufengyou 615, Jiyou 615, Jifengyou 1002 and Tian you 3618 etc. were identified as super rice by MARA, China. And Taiyou 390, Taiyou 398,Taifengyou 208 and Taiyou 1002 won the Provincial or National Gold Award for high-quality rice. The hybrid rice developed have been planted for more than 41 million hectares, and huge social economic and ecological benefits have been created.Great contributions to both China's food security and the rapid development of hybrid rice seed industry have been made.Finally, the future development of hybrid rice breeding was analyzed and discussed.
